Multiple Literacies

One of the major literacies in my life right now is by far text messaging on my phone. I use my cell phone for various different activities. For the majority of the time, my phone is used for text messaging. The main reason for using text messaging so much is that it is sometimes more appropriate to do instead of calling. Text messaging provides an outlet to communicate without noise. During class or a movie, I can “talk” to someone without every making a sound. This silent conversation is simply perfect for some circumstances and places.
Another literacy that I use is music. I absolutely love to listen to my mp3 player, radio or even a CD. Music provides relief for me that cannot be accomplished through any other means. A song can actually change my entire mood for better or worse. Music is another way to communicate for me. If I am too afraid or nervous about telling a friend something, I can play a song that can say exactly what I need. Furthermore, music helps me study sometimes. I can have a song playing and be able to concentrate much more than I would be able to if there was only quiet.
Lastly, Email is a very prominent literacy in my life. Email is one of the best ways to get in touch with a person. I know people that check their email far more often than they check their phones. Email makes the world so much simpler than mailing a letter. Paper letters can take up to three days to reach the recipient, whereas an email is instantly sent. Communication is much more regular, consistent and practical through the use of Email. Multiple literacies are present in almost every aspect of my life; without them, how lost I would be.
